Those who wished to enter public universities next year will need to get a higher score for their MUET examination. Those who wished to enter public universities next year will need to get a higher score for their MUET examination.Students aiming to enter local public universities will have to score higher in the Malaysian University English Test (MUET) from next year as part of Budget 2015's move to enhance graduate employability.
The minimum English entry requirement into public institutions of higher learning will now be according to field of study, and no longer the minimum grade of Band 1 in MUET as is currently required.
Those aiming for Arts and Social Science courses will have to achieve Band 2, while Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics courses must achieve Band 3.
MUET is an English proficiency test used in university admissions in both Malaysia and Singapore.
The bands refer to the level of proficiency in listening, reading, writing and speaking, with Band 6 indicating top proficiency and Band 1 the lowest.
Announcing this when tabling Budget 2015 today, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said the move was to enhance graduates' self confidence and English proficiency skills.
He said about 53,000 graduates remained unemployed after six months of graduating.
Other moves in Budget 2015 to address graduate employability include a RM30 million allocation for an Industry Academia Collaboration programme where universities, government bodies and industries will jointly develop curriculum for internship programmes and industrial training. – October 10, 2014.
