Information transfer from graphic representation to text

MUET MOMENTS

LESSON 10
Information transfer from graphic representation to text
Common problems related to describing and interpreting graphic representations are:

- Not Understanding the Data (I) — Not Reading the Labels: students do not correctly
understand the data in the charts: often they do not carefully read the labels (e.g. students write “15 people were involved in the national street performance event in January 2011”, when they should write “150 people were involved in the national charity event in January 2011”.)

- Not Understanding the Data (II) — Not Applying Common Sense to your Interpretations: students do not apply their common sense to the interpretation of data in the charts (e.g. in the example above, common sense should tell us that it was impossible that only 15 people were involved in the national street performance event in 2011; we should then analyse the chart carefully to find a more satisfactory interpretation).

- Just “Listing” the Data: students simply “list” data from charts or graphs without trying to indicate what is more or less important. You should take note of large differences or changes and present them first.

- Not “Translating” Note Form to Grammatical English: labels or titles are usually in note form, so you need to change them into grammatically correct English in your writing. For example, in a chart describing the activities related to those who participated in the national street performance, one event label would be “stilt walking”. It would therefore be ungrammatical to say “the stilt walking were very agile and entertained the crowd tremendously”. Instead it should be “the stilt walkers were very agile and entertained the
crowd tremendously”.
Mid-2010 MUET Writing Question 1 Information Transfer (Suggested Answer 2)

The chart shows the number of visits to 3 music websites namely, Music Network(MN), Music Connect(MC) and Era Music(EM) by teenagers in the month of August while the table shows the promotional activities of the websites during the same period.
Except for EM, the other 2 websites MN and MC witnessed significant changes in the frequency of visits.
The number of visits to MC fluctuated while MN experienced a gradual decrease in visits for the first 3 weeks followed by a sudden sharp rise during the last week of August.
Promotional activities significantly impacted on the frequency of visits to MN and MC compared to EM.
The MN website saw a sharp decrease from 40,000 visits in the first week of August to 22,000 in the second week to its lowest at 20,000 in the third when no promotional activity was held. Week 4 witnessed a steep rise and a return to 40,000 visits as in Week 1. The promotional activity ‘Name the Singer’ seems to have had a negative effect while the absence of promotions in Week 3 caused a further slight drop.
MC saw drastic increases in visits in Week 2 and 4 due to the promotional activities ‘Free Music CD’ and ‘Free Concert Ticket’. The number of visits fluctuated from around 12000 in Week 1 to sharply rise to almost 35000 in Week 2 when free music CDs were distributed. As there was no promotion in Week 3 it dropped to around 28000. Free concert tickets offered by MC in Week 4 pushed the number of visits to rise drastically to more than 50000 by far the largest at any one time of any of the 3 websites.
The sole promotion of EM in Week 2, ‘Name the Movie’ did not elicit any significant response. From 10000 in Week 1 visits rose to 12000 in Week 2, remained stagnant at Week 3 and returned to 10000 in Week 4.
MN had the most number of promotional activities, was most popular in Week 1 but came in second to MC which offered 2 freebies, in terms of attracting the highest number of visits.
One unusual feature is that when no promotions were held in Week 3 visits to MN and MC dropped, though MC remained the most visited and EM maintained status quo at 12000.
In conclusion, freebies offered made MC the most popular website while and EM which had only one promotion attracted the least number of teenagers.

Mid-2010 MUET Exam - Writing Question 1 Information Transfer (Model Answer 1)

The chart shows the number of visits to 3 music websites namely, Music Network(MN), Music Connect(MC) and Era Music(EM) by teenagers in the month of August while the table shows the promotional activities of the websites during the same period.
Except for EM, which saw a consistent number of visits during the 4 weeks, the other 2 websites MN and MC witnessed significant changes in the frequency of visits.
The number of visits to MC fluctuated while MN experienced a gradual decrease in visits for the first 3 weeks followed by a sudden sharp rise during the last week of August.
The promotional activities had an impact on the frequency of visits to MN and MC but not much effect on EM. The only promotional activity ‘Name the Movie’ in Week 2 caused a nominal increase of about 2000 visits.
The MN website saw a gradual decrease from 40,000 visits in the first week of August to 22,000 in the second week to its lowest at 20,000 in the third week when no promotional activity was held. Week 4 witnessed a steep rise and a return to 40,000 visits as in Week 1. The promotional activity ‘Name the Singer’ seems to have had a negative effect that resulted/caused a drop while the absence of promotions in Week 3 caused a further drop, albeit slightly/a slight one.
EM which had only 1 promotion, ‘Name the Movie’ in Week 2 /The sole promotion of EM in Week 2, ‘Name the Movie’ did not elicit any significant response. From 10000 it rose to 12000 in Week 2, remained stagnant at Week 3 and returned to 10000 in Week 4.
Although MN had 3, which is the most number of promotional activities, it turned out second to MC which offered 2 freebies, in terms of attracting the highest number of visits. MN was most popular only in Week 1.
One unusual feature is that when no promotions were held in Week 3 the number of visits to MN and MC dropped, though MC remained the most visited and EM maintained status quo at 12000.

RM100 school aid to be paid out by end of month
By KAREN CHAPMAN
educate@thestar.com.my

PETALING JAYA: The RM100 school assistance is to be paid out by the end of the month.

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin who is also Education Minister, is expected to make a major announcement today on how the payments will be made.

It is believed the payments will be given out in two batches – one for pupils from Year Two to Five and another for students from Form Two to Four.

Those who will be starting Year One and Form One next year will only receive the assistance then.

It is understood that the payments need to be made soon as the last day of school is next Friday.

The Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia is scheduled to start on Monday and some schools are expected to break early to prepare for the exam.

According to guidelines from the Education Ministry and available on the Selangor Education Department website, the money will be deposited into schools’ Bank Simpanan Nasional accounts while a special account will be opened for schools which do not have one.

It advises school heads who are withdrawing up to RM10,000 to be escorted by two other teachers and to be accompanied by a police escort if they are withdrawing more than RM10,000.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak announced the allocation when he tabled Budget 2012 on Oct 7. He said it was given to help ease the burden of parents.

It is understood that schools will be asked to disburse the cash directly to their students.

It is believed that the money has already been deposited in the accounts of some schools.

School heads in Negri Sembilan were briefed on the matter on Tuesday and informed that the money would be deposited in the schools’ accounts.

They were also asked to disburse the money to students before the last day of school.

Muhyiddin, who is also Education Minister, said last month that the RM100 assistance for 5.3 million students nationwide would be distributed in December.

He had said that although the Budget would only be implemented in January, the monetary aid would be handed out in December in time for the new school term.

In addition, vouchers worth RM200 for purchasing books would also be given to students in tertiary education.

Muhyiddin: PPSMI students can continue to Form 5

- BERNAMA

PUTRAJAYA (Nov 4): The Cabinet has agreed to allow all students in the Teaching and Learning of Science and Mathematics in English (PPSMI) cohort to continue learning the subjects in English until Form Five.

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said on Friday this meant that primary school pupils in the PPSMI cohort could opt whether to continue learning Science and Mathematics in English or Bahasa Malaysia, or in both languages when they enter Form One beginning next year.

"Thus, the teaching and learning of Mathematics and Science in primary schools will only be implemented fully in Bahasa Malaysia in 2016 while in
secondary schools it will be implemented in 2021.

"With the decision, the abolition of the PPSMI is upheld. The government does not intend to reimplement the PPSMI as demanded by certain groups," he said at a media conference.

He said that the government hoped the decision to allow the PPSMI cohort to continue learning in the English Language up to Form Five could please the
parents. - Bernama

Train collides with tanker in Kota Kinabalu
12 seriously hurt as train slams into fuel tanker (The Star)

KOTA KINABALU: A train carrying 200 passengers collided with a fuel tanker at an “unmanned” railway crossing, causing a massive explosion in Kepayan here. Twelve people were seriously injured and 34 passengers could not be traced.

Most of the passengers scrambled out from the rear driver's compartment to flee the inferno that erupted after the collision.

Police have ascertained that no one was inside the four wrecked carriages.

Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Hamza Taib said the train rammed the tank section of the lorry carrying some 27,000 litres of petrol as it was heading into a petrol station to deliver the fuel.

The first carriage derailed upon impact while the second one landed atop the tanker that exploded at the crossing which Sabah Railways director Mohd Zin Mohd Said had classified as “illegal.”

A huge ball of fire rising from the front of the train after it rammed into the tanker carrying 27,000 litres of fuel.

The Star learned that at least two injured passengers were rushed to hospital by members of the public while six others were taken by ambulance.

It is learnt that the commuters were picked up at the Sembulan and Tanjung Aru stations here and were mainly office workers returning from the city to their homes in Papar town about 45km away.

Hamza said police had detained the oil tanker driver for questioning while the train driver Ali Ramli, 50, escaped injury.

The horrific crash comes hardly seven months after Sabah Railways restarted its services on Feb 21 with a massive upgrade of its 134km rail track and new diesel engine train sets.

The colonial railway is the only commercial rail line in the island of Borneo.

It operates services from Kota Kinabalu to west coast towns and interior Tenom.

Since the reopening, there have been several accidents at “unmanned” crossings though there were no serious injuries until yesterday's incident.

“This is the worst mishap in our history,” said Mohd Zin.
