Caught in the Middle

MISSING AMOS
Dad suspects relatives hiding him
by DAWN CHAN (Malay Mail)

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 30: There is a double twist to the saga of the 12-year-old who left home on Christmas Eve, presumably out of guilt over bullying Rusmiyati Wiji, the family’s Indonesian maid.
His piano teacher father has lodged a police report on his suspicions that his relatives were hiding him.It is also discovered that the boy, Amos Foong Dean Chang, was sent to a welfare home to shelter him from the relatives! His father, Foong Choo Yun, lodged the report at the Taman Tun Dr Ismail police station on Tuesday at 5.25pm.“All this started after a close female relative complained to the Welfare Department that my wife and I had abused Amos in December last year,” he told The Malay Mail.Foong said they were fearful of Amos getting too close to the relative, especially at a private hospital where he underwent paediatric treatment.“Doctors there advised me to place Amos in a safer place. Based on their recommendations, I approached a shelter (to take Amos).”He said this is the first time that Amos had run away from home.Amos stayed at the shelter in Petaling Jaya for eight months before Foong brought him back to their SS19, Subang Jaya, home on Aug 30.During Amos’s stay there, his father took him to his school in Subang Jaya and back to the shelter at night (see accompanying story).“On Dec 9, the Welfare Department, hospital and shelter declared that there was no proof of any kind of abuse on Amos.”After Amos went missing on Dec 24, he said he made two visits to relatives’ homes in Taman Tun Dr Ismail and Bandar Sri Damansara two days ago to look for him but to no avail. Foong believes Amos has been brought to his other relatives’ houses in the north.
